Fast Food Fast Journal

The HOV lane or the Drive-Thru.

There's a system along the highways around Denver (and many other US cities) that has created a special lane for HOV's (high occupancy vehicles) to free up some of the congestion on the roads.

The principle is simple. Cars with one person in them make more cars on the road than those that have people car-pooling. Give cars with more people in them some insentive in the form of faster moving traffic and everyone benefits (including those going it on their own.)

Changing our lifestyles, even if only a little bit is a challenge. We jump behind the wheel of our day and get stuck in the same pattern. The Fast Food Fast is meant to help us modify our tendency to spend more money than necessary on eating, giving us additional funds for ministry.

But evidently, it's not that easy with 100 people going it on our own. It could be a lot easier if you were doing the Fast Food Fast with others.

Here's a suggestion. Many of us are part of a small group Bible study, a Sunday School class or some kind of ministry team (like a music group or choir). Talk it over with the others in your group and consider adopting the Fast Food Fast as a ministry project you can adopt together. Your group of 5-10 people may not seem like a lot, but we only need 100 people participating in the weekly fast to cover the costs of all the outreach programs we're doing for a whole year!

Think if it as an HOV lane. Together you can keep up on progress, discuss the studies in the Fast Food Fast Guide and perhaps even be part of one of the outreach projects as a group!

It's in the mail.

Well, it took a while, but finally the first wave of mail is in the postal system headed to people's homes (maybe even yours.) And while it has been a thing of prayer and I believe inspiration, I've found myself a bit shaken by having gotten this far.

I think it's a combination of things that has unsettled me. Part of it is just how much I realize this project is bigger than I am. It's been an idea that has taken hold of me, not the other way around. I get the occasional "what were you thinking!" going on in my head. The question is usually answered by some other part of my brain with, "It wasn't ALL my idea." It's been a God thing he's asked me to do regardless of how many people join in.

I've been reading The Barbarian Way by Erwin McManus, where he describes following Christ as something that isn't civilized, neat and tidy. It's risky, out of control (at least out of our control), almost barbaric. It's much more a "John the Baptist" kind of life than it ever was a "rich young ruler" kind of life. Rather than having a false sense of being in control of life, we realize that following the Master is taking us over.

It didn't bother John that he never won the "best dressed man of the year" award and was never asked to be a guest on some cooking show to share his locust and honey recipe. But when it was a question of speaking out, he never drew back. And it cost him.

And it's going to cost us as well. It's going to take more than trying to sound convincing from pulpits where the faithless are never present. It's going to mean getting in people's faces and into their lives like John the Baptist did. And it's going to cost us.

I long to see people involved in changing the course of history in Europe as people are confronted with the living Christ. I hope the Fast Food Fast will put prayers and funding in that direction. But if I'm going to be part of the revolution, the change has got to start with a decision to unleash the untamed faith within me.

Welcome to the Journal!

No blogsite is complete without a place for us to blog. I thought I'd start out by simply asking you to comment on the Fast Food Fast. It hasn't even started and I'm already seeing visits everyday. So let's get it going!

I'm challenged by it. Don't get me wrong. I'm not a "burger basher" (even though I prefer Mexican food). I'm not joining the "super-size me" band wagon (even though I haven't been able bring myself to eat a meal at Mickey D's since I saw the film). I'm not even trying to lose weight (though that probably wouldn't hurt).

But I'm really wanting to get my heart in line with what God wants. And Jesus says that my treasure is a pretty good GPS locator for where my heart is (Matt. 6:21). I'm hoping this year with the FFF will help me move it toward where it needs to be. It'll be a God-thing for sure.
